Urgent appeal to all Islamic relief organizations to support Madagascar

The International Islamic Relief Organization (IIRO) made an urgent appeal to all relief Islamic organizations to support Madagascar Island after the devastating hurricane that killed more than 123 people,and displaced around 190 thousands.

The secretary general of IIRO Dr. Adnan Khalil said that the Tropical Cyclone Giovanna hit, during the last few days, the heavily populated portion of the poor Island of Madagascar, and left more than 129 thousand persons without shelter.

He pointed that the dramatic results of this hurricane requires intensifying the efforts of the IIRO affiliated committees that numbers 25 organizations, especially that those deprived people need urgent quantities of food and medicines, in addition to suitable shelter.

According to reports received by IIRO from the National Agency of Madagascar Catastrophe Department, the speed of this cyclone reached 200 km/h , and caused severe damages in the province of Pricavili, which is located at 260 km distance from the capital “Antananarivo” , uprooted trees, causing heavy losses in lives and properties.

Madagascar is an island country located in the Indian Ocean off the southeastern coast of Africa. The nation comprises the island of Madagascar (the fourth-largest island in the world), as well as numerous smaller peripheral islands.

In 2011, the population of Madagascar was estimated at around 21.9 million, 90% of whom live on less than two dollars per day. Malagasy and French are both official languages of the state.
