Gaza citizens using home's roof for cultivating some vegetables

Faraj Abdulhakeem, in order to overcome poverty due to the deterioration of the economic situation in Gaza, did not find a way to earn his living but to use his home’s roof to cultivate some vegetables and breeding some poultry.

The roof of Faraj’s home became a small farm for cultivating vegetables, some trees, and a place for breeding two goats ,as well as a number of poultry and rabbits to ensure his family’s living throughout the year.

This kind of activity became a familiar practice, in Gaza, with many Palestinian families still living under the Israeli siege that negatively affected normal life in all levels.

Abdulhakeem, who is running a small grocery in Gaza, explained the that the idea of using his home’s roof for cultivating came to his mind after being affected by the prevailing deterioration of economic situation.

He added that it all started two years ago, when he used some small primitive containers to plant some vegetables just for fun, and he discovered that it produced good and promising quantities.

From his part, Mohammad Ramadan, 30-years, said that he is also following the same idea since two years, noting that such practice did not cost him much money or time , and that all members of his family are cooperating together.

Ramadan, added that he is planting citrus, one olive tree, one lemon tree, in addition to some vegetables e.g. eggplants, tomatoes, cucumbers, radishes, peas, and green beans.
